They are some of the most famous and respected people in their field. They have dedicated their lives to ensuring that justice is served, and that the legal system works properly. These individuals have made a significant impact on the world in more ways than one, and the impact of their work continues to live on even today.
Abraham Lincoln
The sixteenth president of the United States, President Abraham Lincoln was also a practicing lawyer before diving into politics. In 1834 John T. Stuart, a Springfield attorney, encouraged him to study law and lent him the necessary books. Less than three years later Lincoln was admitted to the bar and joined Stuart as a junior partner. He formed two additional partnerships before being elected President.
Hailing from a rural village, unlike most lawyers of his time, he was self-taught and lay great emphasis on self-education. One advice offered by him to an aspiring lawyer seeking his advice was recorded in a letter, which read: "If you wish to be a lawyer, attach no consequence to the place you are in, or the person you are with; but get books, sit down anywhere, and go to reading for yourself. That will make a lawyer of you quicker than any other way."
President Abraham Lincoln obtained his law license in 1836, before going on to build his practice. Lincoln's successful career as a lawyer was largely due to his great ability of taking complex cases, identifying the important points, and then presenting it simply in court. Additionally, he knew how to deliver persuasive arguments while being aware of the jury's mood which aided him greatly during trials. Another plus was that Lincoln came across as simple, friendly, and relaxed when talking with witnesses or doing cross-examinations. He is often remembered for guiding the nation through the turmoil of the Civil War and actively working to ensure Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment to end slavery. He practiced law for nearly 25 years in Illinois before he was elected President.
